The Czech start-up company VRgineers has introduced a new virtual reality headset. XTAL – so the short name of the device – comes with chic specifications and is clearly aimed at professional VR users.

5K resolution & 170-degree field of view

Engineers, architects and similar users can look forward to an OLED display with a resolution of 5120 x 1440 pixels (2560 x 1440 per eye) at XTAL. The built-in lenses do not use the common Fresnel technology. Meanwhile, a built-in sound card should provide spatial 3D sound.

The field of vision is and remains an important aspect of virtual reality glasses – and XTAL should not disappoint here either: With a Field of View of 170 degrees, the headset surpasses glasses like the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, which are known to reach 110 degrees, but is also below the 200 degrees of a Pimax 8K.

Automatic Interpupillary Distance & Hand Tracking

The rest of the equipment is also interesting: With AutoEye VRgineers has integrated an Interpupillary Distance technology (IPD), which automatically aligns the installed lenses to the eye relief of the respective user. This can be useful if a headset is used by several colleagues within a company.

Among other things, a built-in microphone that listens to voice commands is used for the operation. In addition, the manufacturer has added a few Leap Motion sensors to its headset. The manufacturer recently demonstrated just how well the hand tracking technology works.

How much should this comprehensive package cost us? In the USA, XTAL is available for a proud price of 5,800 US dollars and the first copies are scheduled for delivery in September 2018. The product is also clearly priced for customers from industry, which has become one of the most important areas of application for virtual reality.
