VirtualLink: Future Windows Mixed Reality headsets connected with a cable

VirtualLink Microsoft wins the game. Not all players have caught the VR trend even there is already a very wide range of headsets and games available, but gamers are slow to embrace the new technology. VR fans, as well as industry experts, think that the headsets are simply too expensive and too cumbersome to use at the moment.

According to many experts, a breakthrough in virtual reality technology requires a completely wireless VR headset. Technically, this is not possible so far, but the previous cable chaos with Windows Mixed Reality headsets may at least be significantly reduced in the future.

The leading manufacturers of VR headsets and some partners have joined forces to develop VirtualLink. This is a connection standard for VR headsets, which only requires a single USB Type-C cable. For example, current Windows Mixed Reality headsets still require HDMI 2.0, DisplayPort 1.2 and USB 3.0 Type-A or USB Type-C to work on a PC.

Microsoft supports VirtualLink

Microsoft’s Scott Evans, General Manager for Windows Mixed Reality, was pleased with the new partnership in an initial statement. “We’ve been involved with VirtualLink from the beginning and support the industry standard for new Windows experiences, including Mixed Reality.

Microsoft and its partners have still not announced the second generation of mixed reality headsets. With the announcement of this technology, it is quite conceivable that there will be further devices. Microsoft has, however, recently given its own VR ambitions a major setback with the denial of Xbox VR.
