TSMC is already working on the next 1nm nodes, also called ’10 angstroms’ This was revealed by the Prime Minister of Taiwan, who is confident in the technological capabilities of the manufacturer.
TSMC is already working on 1 nm nodes and investing 32.32 billion
The 1nm nodes are already in planning, though TSMC doesn’t yet have the technology to start manufacturing them. This is going to require a multi-million dollar investment. There is talk that the manufacturer will invest about 32,000 million dollars in its facilities to manufacture such advanced nodes.
TSMC plans to build factories for its 1nm nodes near the Longtan Science Park near Taoyuan, Shen Jong-chin, Taiwan’s vice premier, said in an interview with Economic Daily.
The investment will be larger than those seen with the 5nm or 3nm nodes, where the maker invested more than $20.
When will the 1nm nodes arrive?
It should be noted that the manufacturer plans to start manufacturing chips with 2nm nodes in mid-2025, to start seeing the first processors and graphics cards with this technology in 2026, so it’s possible that the manufacture of the first wafers with 1nm nodes will start in 2027 or 2028.
We know that nodes are getting more and more expensive to manufacture as their complexity increases, so commercial processors and graphics cards are expected to get more and more expensive for this reason.
