Toshiba dynaEdge AR: an augmented reality headset under Windows 10

Toshiba dynaEdge is an augmented reality headset for businesses. That is specially designed for factory work. The device connects directly to a laptop under Windows 10, which can be worn on the belt by the user. With this device, Toshiba wants to simplify the integration of augmented reality in business.

Many companies are looking to equip their employees with augmented reality headphones. Unfortunately, most of them face a problem of integration into their IT ecosystem. The different AR helmets available today have a proprietary interface. And the workforce needs to be trained to learn how to use it. This learning can be time consuming and expensive.

Also, for organizations that must manage the IT security of entire device fleets. Also, these atypical devices represent an additional workload. While most augmented reality headsets run on the Android operating system, Toshiba comes with a Windows 10 AR headset. That will integrate more easily into the IT ecosystem of companies that already use PCs on this OS.

The Japanese company today unveils an augmented reality headset dynaEdge. Also, that is for professional use in business. Besides, the device has a design very similar to Google Glass. That offers a 640 × 360 0.25-inch display.

Aesthetically speaking, the dynaEdge has no particularity. And we can not say that it is an elegant fashion accessory. However, this AR headset differentiable by the fact that connects by a USB-C cable to a mini PC running Windows 10 Professional. The computer in question is a dynaEdge Mobile Mini PC, marketed in August 2017, equipped with an Intel Core M processor coupled with 6GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage space.

It comes with a battery offering six hours of autonomy and clings to the belt of the user. Thus, the wearer benefits from the computing power and the familiar interface of a Windows 10 computer while maintaining its mobility. The Microsoft Hololens already offers the same principle, but it is much more imposing and intrusive.

Its design is indeed thinking to hang it on a construction helmet. Optimized for factory work, the dynaEdge makes it possible to navigate between checklists, consult PDF documents, stream videos of what the user is looking at, scan QR codes or display images.

All of these features come without the need to use your hands with voice commands. There is also a proximity sensor, ambient light sensor, LED bulb, GPS, compass, gyroscope, camera, speaker, and microphone.

Despite a somewhat high price of 1899 dollars, the Toshiba dynaEdge could well establish itself as a reference in the market for augmented reality for businesses.
