The Radeon R9 390X probably could have resembled a filtered prototype

Even though the Radeon R9 390X arrived in June 2015, a prototype of AMD’s reference version for this graphic has only just been released. Let’s remember that the R9 390X only came in special versions and had no reference model.

Strangely enough, the design has a dual fan layout, with a case very similar to that of the R9 290X, but obviously adapted to this new cooling system. As far as you can see, it seems to have 4 heatpipes and a pretty good density of aluminium fins.

On the back we see that it doesn’t have a back plate, and the use of 6+8 power pins, which is more or less what we’ve seen in the simplest custom models.

No doubt it would have been good to see how it worked because the 290X blower solution slightly exceeded 90 degrees. It’ll be interesting to see if anyone who got these photos can get proof of it.
