On natick.research.microsoft.com we have received information about the data center that Microsoft has installed on the seabed, a project that aims to take advantage of the low temperatures of the underwater environment to save energy.
Why Microsoft Put it under water?
They have now installed webcams so that everyone can see the fish swimming around the 27.6 petabyte data centre, located near the Scottish coast in June.
The current installation in Orkney will be in use for about five years. There are 864 servers and 27.6 petabytes of storage space, and it has a huge submarine cable that also connects it to the Internet.
Though it is another experiment at the moment, this technology could be the future of the cloud, and webcams are essential for monitoring the impact on marine life. Microsoft sees the environmental conditions near its data center as part of the experiment, but we can always be mesmerized by different fish species swimming around a really impressive structure.
Currently, there are only two webcams installed. In the upper menu, in the LIVE CAMS section, you can see them alongside a page where they comment on some of the technical features of the project. It is ideal to see how pipes rust and fish feed on organisms that grow on metal.
