The company YMTC says it will bring the speeds of DDR4 RAM to NAND

Yangtze Memory Technologies or YMTC, a manufacturer of NAND memory owned by the Chinese government, today made a pretty strong announcement: they will be able to bring the speeds of DDR4 RAM into NAND memory. We explain the meaning of this announcement.

The NAND faster than ever?

Currently, DDR4 memory transfer rates range from 17 GB/s (not Gbps) to 25.6 GB/s, while NAND memory in a current NVMe SSD can reach approximately 3.5 GB/s for sequential reading or 2.1 GB/s for sequential writing. Therefore, this announcement offers the possibility of an unprecedented breakthrough in the industry and of great importance for components such as SSDs or internal memories of mobile devices.

The new technology, called “Xtacking Technology”, is also characterized by a higher development speed (especially time-to-market) and a higher bit density than conventional NAND. The latter makes us wonder what the reliability of these dizzying memories will be since a higher bit density is usually associated with a shorter life if they have no special features.

Although YMTC is a new player in this market, we must remember that it is owned by no less than the Chinese Government and has $24 billion in funding, which gives some credibility to its objectives.

Its CEO, Simon Yang, announced in a press release that he will speak tomorrow at the Flash Memory Summit to explain how they will achieve this goal. This is in addition to the announcement of the ADATA conference on the new M.3 storage, but the most important thing is to see how many months or years it will take us to see this progress and whether it is actually as big as that announced by YMTC.
