By combining virtual reality and augmented reality, PSVR 2 allows users to see their real surroundings while immersing themselves in the VR environment. That is what Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida says in an interview with The Independent.
Since its launch in early 2017, PlayStation VR has dominated the virtual reality headset market. It is the ideal choice because of its affordable price, numerous PlayStation 4s in circulation or because of its very successful design. But it’ s not perfect and Sony intends to fix the shortcomings of this first iteration with a second, perfected model.
Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida spoke on the subject in an interview with The Independent at IFA 2018, saying that one of the current problems with virtual reality is that the user cannot see the outside while wearing a VR helmet. This can be dangerous and forces you to sit in the virtual world.
PSVR 2: Sony wants to mix Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality
In order to solve this problem, the Japanese giant wants to resort to a mixed reality. This would indeed be a question of “mixing” virtual reality and augmented reality so that the VR can be superimposed on the user’s real environment.
However, Yoshida did not go into detail, but that statement suggests that the future PSVR 2 could be both a VR helmet and an AR helmet. However, it is not known when PSVR 2 will be introduced by Sony. It is very likely that this new helmet will not be released prior to the PS5.
