According to media sources, back-end IC package testers will start shipping AMD’s custom processor for the Sony PS5 to downstream vendors starting next week and will reach a small peak by the end of the third quarter. The processor is based on a custom Zen 2 CPU architecture, RDNA 2 GPU architecture, and is built in a 7nm process that integrates eight CPU cores and supports synchronous multithreading at a main frequency of 3.5GHz, and adapts itself to the current situation.
In another context, the new Sony PS5 game console will be powered by AMD’s custom 8-core Zen 2 CPU at 3.5 GHz (inverter support), according to full configuration information previously announced by Sony. The graphics card is a custom AMD GPU with RDNA2 architecture, clocked at up to 2.23 GHz, and supporting 10.28 trillion floating-point operations per second. With 16GB of GDDR6 memory and 825GB of custom SSD and a 100GB single-disk 4K UHD Blu-ray drive, it supports 120Hz/8K output, 3D audio, and more, and is directly backward compatible with PS4 games. The machine will also be equipped with a newly developed DualSense handle.
