Windows 10 April 2018 Update, crash and CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED error multiply

There have been problems since its availability. One of the last is the most annoying. More and more people are being affected.

Upgrading their PC to Windows 10 v1803 alias April Update triggers a rather mysterious behavior resulting in a complete machine crash. A beautiful BSOD, a blue screen of death, appears. One of the most common error codes seems to be “CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED”.

Judging by the reports, this BSOD occurs on different hardware configurations. The error is problematic because it does not seem related to a specific task. It can appear at any time. For some, this happens at the launch of Skype for others when surfing the web. The same crash is also observed in the middle of a video game or when viewing a video.

A bug mysterious enough

At this stage, it is impossible to have a specific model to reproduce the typical context causing this BSOD. However, the various discussions on Reddit are moving towards a problem with the GPU (the graphics card). A driver compatibility problem is not impossible but reinstalling the graphics drivers does not change the situation.

A second track is based on the observation that most reports talk about problems with Acer devices. It is thus not excluded that a bug of the pilot is in the cause. This is not the first time such a hypothesis has been put forward. For example, problems with Chrome seem to resolve if the browser’s hardware acceleration is disabled.

For the moment Acer or Microsoft have not yet recognized the problems and no official workaround solution is available.

Windows 10 April 2018 Update, a solution

The only way to solve this crash is to backpedal to Windows 10. In clear it is necessary to return temporarily to the previous version is Windows 10 Fall Creators Update.

Windows 10 April Update is currently only available through manual installation. Microsoft is expected to release a cumulative update as of the first wave of automatic deployment. It will propose fixes normally concerning the last known bugs.

The appointment is fixed for May 8th, Patch Tuesday.
