SilverStone ECM23 to mount an M.2 SSD in a PCI Express slot

One of the strangest products we’ve seen lately, SilverStone ECM23 features an adapter to mount an M.2-2280 M-Key SSD on one of the PCI Express 3.0 x 16 slots on the motherboard, which expands the possibilities of using these high-speed storage media.

The SilverStone ECM23 has a pretty attractive design based on a 1980s game cartridge. It features an M.2-2280 M-Key slot inside with PCIe x4 cabling to accommodate an advanced NVMe SSD. Meaning that the rest of the SilverStone ECM23 tracks are not used and only serve to increase restraint, as the lift doesn’t have an additional cardholder to hold it in place. The motherboard has no logic of its own, apart from the link/activity LEDs for the four PCIe lanes.

This SilverStone ECM23 also serves as a cooler for the installed SSD as it contains a 40-gram aluminum block that helps lower the operating temperature. On the other side, heat is extracted from a copper braid printed on the PCB, which is supposed to transport it backward, having the above aluminum backplane. This accessory measures 105 mm x 11 mm x 44 mm and weighs only 52 g, the company has not announced the retail price, although it will be very interesting for users without M.2 ports with an available PCI Express x16 slot.
