Samsung Odyssey+ VR headset with AMOLED Dual Display and 1.233 dpi Density

Samsung has introduced a new mixed reality headset: The Samsung HMD Odyssey+ features a 3.5-inch AMOLED screen with a resolution of 2,880 x 1,600 pixels or 1,440 x 1,600 pixels per eye. South Koreans use a 60 or 90 Hz frequency and a 110° field of view. HDMI 2.0 and USB 3.0 connections are available. AKG Premium Audio is also on board.

There are also multiple microphones, a gyroscope, a proximity sensor, a G sensor, an IPD sensor, and two Windows MR cameras. The HMD works with 6DOF tracking. So as you can see, Microsoft’s mixed reality platform for Windows is under attack. The Samsung HMD Odyssey+ only works in connection with a Windows PC. This is supposed to almost double the perceived pixel density. Time should show whether it’s a powerful publicity slogan or the actual impression is visible.

Another notable innovation is the inclusion of Bluetooth sensors that allow the use of motion controls without the need to connect them via the PC. The main innovation of the Odyssey+ is the inclusion of a new anti-screen door effect technology that superimposes a pattern of pixels on the upper layers. Creating a perception of 1,233 ppi on the real 616, which presents the AMOLED displays. It also has an extension of 8 mm in the width of both the interior and the nostril to prevent the appearance of fog and facilitate prolonged use.

According to the specifications, the biggest innovation of this Samsung Odyssey+ is a technology that would reduce the “grid effect”, i.e. the black grid perceived between the pixels, by providing slightly more than twice the number of pixels of the screen resolution. And how do you do that? According to Samsung, applying a light diffuser to the grating “uses ambient light from adjacent pixels to see black lines almost impossible.

On the other hand, we have a dual microphone system for Cortana and two integrated AKG headphones with 360-degree sound and compatibility with 6DOF wireless controllers. In addition, Samsung has taken the opportunity to slightly improve the design by making its glasses lighter with a weight of 594 grams, a larger 40mm nose guard and a wider 146mm eye box. Samsung says these improvements offer better ergonomics and reduce window fogging.
