Despite some people believing that it is too late for HDR10+ to become the standard format, mainly because of the undisputed mastery of HDR technology, Panasonic, 20th Century Fox and Samsung could pave the way for positive acceptance of the technology.

Indeed, it has been confirmed that some Panasonic and Samsung 4K TVs will soon support HDR10+ which primarily provides HDR performance that is better tailored to the specific capabilities of each TV, meaning that brightness and color adjustments are possible to be made “frame by frame”.

Which specific devices will support HDR10+, both Panasonic and Samsung will ensure that the most of their 2018 TV lines will include them through firmware upgrades.

What is the difference between these technologies?

The main difference between HDR10 and HDR10+ and Dolby Vision is that the latter two use dynamic metadata instead of fixed metadata, which in turn is pre-coded into scenes. Although Dolby Vision supports high brightness TVs and offers 12-bit color depth instead of 10-bit, the cost of this technology is crucial, so the increase of HDR10+ is not so unlikely.

So far it has been announced that 20th Century Fox will announce the details of the HDR10+ upgrade in the coming weeks, but the network says that some of its titles are ready to receive the technology. A complete list of all companies that have chosen this technology can be found here.
