The first generation Ryzen Threadripper processor range is enjoying a significant price reduction. This change enables AMD to make its HEDT offer more relevant compared to Intel.
Ryzen Threadripper of AMD, prices collapse, Intel must wake up
Intel is clearly being bullied by AMD since the arrival of Ryzen processors. AMD’s goal has been to make Intel’s Mainstream and HEDT offerings obsolete. The approach has gone through a multiplication of the core number which has impressively increased the computing power. Accumulated with almost a decade of imposing the four-heart rule to everyone, Intel was forced to react.
We witnessed the launch of new products. However, haste has not yet resulted in a coherent response. It took more than 12 months before Intel decided to align itself with 8 cores that had become the current high-end standard in the Mainstream segment. We will not talk about the HEDT offer now focused on 28 cores requiring new motherboards and presentations using extreme overclocking.
Add to this the 22 cores that can be used on the LGA 2066, the probable arrival of the name Core i9 in the Mainstream and an uncertain Z390 on its new nature… in short, Intel is under pressure and it shows.
For its part, AMD has absolutely no desire to lower the pressure. We witnessed the launch of the second generation Ryzen and the announcement of the Ryzen Threadripper taking advantage of Zen+ architecture. The firm already promises 32 hearts as a showcase. This context of innovation inevitably pushes prices. Ryzen Threadripper 1000 series pricing is in free fall. It is very likely that this is an approach to disposing of stocks. Some shops are preparing for the arrival of the second generation.
The Ryzen Threadripper 1950X (16C/32T) collapsed below 650 € and the Threadripper 1920X (12 C/24T) was around 550 €. For comparison, the Core i9-7900X(10C/20T) approaches 1000 €.
Note that AMD does not seem to want to calm the game. Its next showcase, the Ryzen Threadripper 2990X with 32 hearts starts to be referenced at 1500 €. At such a price, Intel’s entire HEDT range could be disrupted if the giant does not react.
