More powerful AMD Ryzen 4000 APUs were detected one day after the first chip was filtered in 3DMark. The new processors, part of the Renoir APU family, are the AMD Ryzen 9 4900H and Ryzen 7 4800H.
Ryzen 9 4900H and Ryzen 7 4800H are 8-core, 16-wire processors
Both processors with more cores and threads are expected to come onto the market in early 2020. The AMD Ryzen 9 4900H and Ryzen 7 4800H are 8-core, 16-wire processors with the faster 7nm Zen 2 architecture and Vega graphics.
Yesterday we saw some Ryzen 4000 U-Series 15W models with the Ryzen 7 4700U filter. Today we see three models with a total of 45W, all of which have some strong specifications and will compete with ninth-generation Intel laptops. The details come from the Mobile01 forums, where a user unveiled the Ryzen 9 4900H and Ryzen 7 4800H APUs.
The Ryzen 4900H and Ryzen 4800H shall have 8 cores and 16 threads. There are no further detailed specifications, but this is twice as many cores and threads as the existing line of third-generation Ryzen APUs. The Ryzen 7 3750H has 4 cores and 8 threads. This puts AMD on par with Intel’s Core i9 H-series product line. It is also mentioned that these two chips, the Ryzen 9 4900H and Ryzen 4800H, provide the same performance as the Core i9-9880H, which is a chip with a base clock of 2.30 GHz and a boost clock of up to 4.80 GHz. It shouldn’t come as a surprise if both chips end up near the Core i9-9980HK, which has a +200 MHz boost clock.
This shows that AMD’s Zen 2 architecture does not need the clock speeds to keep up with Intel’s faster processors, and the IPC advantage is enough to close the gap. It is also claimed that the power consumption in AMD Ryzen 4000 APUs will be significantly lower than that of Intel chips, but the density of the 7nm APUs would cause a slight temperature peak. Therefore, we can expect high-performance cooling in gaming notebooks using these chips.
In addition to the processors mentioned above, a Ryzen 7 4800HS was listed, as can be seen in the upcoming ASUS GA401IV laptop. The Ryzen 7 4800HS appears to be a performance-optimized version of the 4800H, offering lower clock speeds at slightly lower power consumption. The laptop is also equipped with 16GB of DDR4 memory, Windows 10 and supports a display from 14″. We’ll keep you up to date.
