Qualcomm comments on MediaTek chip optimization scandal

Last week, Anandtech’s Feature Material was released citing evidence of MediaTek’s “optimization” of its chip’s behavior for certain popular test packages. The data suggests that the chip developer allowed OEMs to enable “sport mode” at higher frequencies by performing certain tests on the list.

In its defense, the Taiwanese company added that this is a common industry practice and that its “main competitor” also uses these methods. Qualcomm is certainly the main competitor in this area, so we can assume that MediaTek has hinted at an American chip designer.

Reporters from the Android Authority decided to comment on this by Qualcomm, and the company stated categorically that it did not resort to these tricks: “A white list is a well-known approach when apps with certain names put the device in maximum performance mode. However, actions to add test software to the White List are generally considered fraudulent, as they violate the meaning of the benchmark test, which is designed to evaluate the user’s environment in daily use of the device. Qualcomm does not use white lists. ”

It is possible that MediaTek has another competitor in mind, such as Huawei or Samsung. But these companies mainly produce chips for their devices – only Samsung sometimes sells its single-chip systems to others. Qualcomm is the only major company that competes directly with MediaTek in the global marketplace.

This story, which comes up from time to time in connection with one manufacturer or another, suggests that these companies have not learned a lesson and cannot always resist the temptation to overestimate test results. This is particularly disappointing when compared to the MediaTek, whose modern Helio G chips and main processor Dimensity 1000 have excellent features and do not really need these “optimizations”.
