Blackmagic Design eGPU with Radeon Pro 580 for Mac. You may know the manufacturer Blackmagic Design for its video editing solutions. It is primarily aimed at power users or professionals, but also offered end users capture solutions for recording signals from video game consoles. Now the company is presenting a new external graphics card, apparently developed in cooperation with Apple.
Apple today unveiled new MacBook Pro. At the same time, an eGPU from Blackmagic Design appeared in the Apple Store.
The external graphics card has four USB 3 ports on the rear panel, one HDMI port, and two Thunderbolt 3 ports. According to the manufacturer, one of these allows you to easily connect an LG UltraFine 5K display and operate it on your Mac. At the same time, you can charge your MacBook Pro without the need for an additional power adapter. The integrated power supply offers 85 watts of charging power.
The eGPU from Blackmagic Design uses a chassis that adapts to the color of current Apple laptops.
Inside a Radeon Pro 580 with 8 GB GDDR5 graphics memory. It should help take virtual reality and video editing on the MacBook (Pro) to a new level.
Apple itself claims to have worked with Blackmagic Design in product development. The eGPU increases the graphics performance of a 15-inch MacBook Pro by a factor of 2.8 and that of the 13-inch model by a factor of 8.
Price and availability
The device is available at the Apple Retail Store for €695. Delivery is almost immediate. The earliest delivery date is 16 July. The scope of delivery also includes a Thunderbolt 3 cable half a meter long.
