An Apple patent describes a display type with adjustable reflectivity.
In order to achieve this option – and thus perhaps turn a display into a kind of holographic mirror – a new type of layer is applied over the conventional display layers according to the patent.
Adjustable pole filters are the secret
This consists of adjustable pole filters. This allows you to control how much light penetrates outwards from the screen diodes and how much light is to be reflected from the outside.
In the most radical case, this could switch between a normal display operation and mirror use. The patent also describes that individual components could be addressed differently.
The patent could be used for smart mirrors
This would create differentiated interaction possibilities, thanks to which a “smart mirror” could also be realized.
As always, however, it is not known whether the patent will one day actually become a product. We always like to point that out: Not every patent is ready for series production.
