Western Digital today introduced the Ultrastar DC HC530 HDD with a capacity of 14TB, no other CMR (conventional magnetic recording) HDD in the industry offers more capacity than this unit.

We cannot deny that there is an urgent need for more capacity, games, applications, and all kinds of multimedia content occupy more and more storage space. Hard drive manufacturers know this and are creating increasingly larger capacity drives to meet this demand.

Based on Western Digital’s fifth-generation HelioSeal technology, the Ultrastar DC HC530 is designed for public and private cloud environments where storage density, per gigabyte costs, and power consumption are paramount.

The Ultrastar DC HC530 is a 14TB CMR unit that offers immediate ease-of-use for random write workloads in enterprise and cloud data centres. Since 2014, the company’s unique patented HelioSeal process seals the helium in the unit to provide unmatched capacity, exceptional energy efficiency and long-term data centre reliability. These disks will be available in SAS and SATA interfaces. In the SAS version, you will have a 12 Gb/s interface, and in the SATA version, you will have about 6 Gb/s.

The 14 TB Ultrastar DC HC530 hard drive is currently being shipped to selected customers.
