Virtual reality is a fascinating subject that is of growing interest to screenwriters in literature, film… and television. On 28 March 2018, the documentary Ready Player One, directed by Steven Spielberg and adapted from Ernest Cline’s eponymous novel, was released in French cinemas. This big-budget blockbuster could well introduce RV to those who are not yet familiar with this technology.

In parallel, a trailer for a new series has just been put online. Entitled Kiss me First, this British series features the heroine Leila (played by Tallulah Haddon). This young woman is completely addicted to video games, and more precisely to virtual reality. Every day, she immerses herself in the virtual world of Agora.

To do this, she wears her virtual reality helmet coupled with an accessory called Aznaband. This device allows transcribing the emotions as well as the sensations felt by the avatar of the player. Joy, sadness, pleasure, pain… the Aznaband user can feel everything his character experiences. A delightful and terrifying glimpse into the future of RVing.

As the trailer reveals, the series will combine real images with computer generated scenes (CG). Indeed, the passages taking place in the real world will be filmed using a camera, while the moments spent in the virtual world of Agora will be created from scratch. That will allow distinguishing the scenes of the real world from the views in the RV, but also and especially to stage the fantastic possibilities offered by the virtual.

Netflix Kiss me First: VR is of increasing interest to screenwriters

As you will have understood, Kiss me First has many similarities with Ready Player One. However, the serial format should allow the creators of the program to propose a framework exploring more deeply the ins and outs of an ultra-realistic and addictive virtual world. One can hope that the scenario explores the consequences on society and the psychology of users or the different fields of application of this invention.

Anyway, Kiss me First, and Ready Player One is far from being the first fictions about RV. Some of the most cult works include Matrix, Tron, Total Recall, or more recently the famous Sword Art Online manga which will also be adapted in series Netflix soon.

Kiss me First will be broadcast from 2 April 2018 on Channel 4 in the UK. After that, the series will be offered internationally on Netflix, but it is not known at what time.
