Mondly AR: Learning Foreign Languages with Augmented Reality

Last year Mondly released their language learning program Mondly VR for Gear VR and Google Daydream. In further cooperation with Google, it is now also available as an Augmented Reality app.

If you want to learn a foreign language today, you can do it classically in schools or universities. If you don’t have time for this, there are various good Internet portals. However, the variants mentioned so far only provide a few visualizations of the learning process – apart from pictures, of course. And often realistic situations and conversations are missing there.

Immersive learning of foreign languages

The development studio Mondly discovered this as a gap in the market and last year launched Mondly VR, a learning program for virtual reality. The app with integrated speech recognition, available on Gear VR and Daydream, puts us in virtual situations in which we can expand our language skills and practice their application – for example when checking into a hotel.

If speaking a foreign language is practised in realistic situations, not only does it stick better, but the inhibitions to really speak should also fall with it. But not everyone has the right VR glasses.

That’s why Mondly has now released AR in collaboration with Google Mondly. The Augmented Reality app runs on Google’s ARCore platform and also uses speech recognition. The app takes a virtual teacher to where we are right now. The teacher supports the learning content through virtual objects and engages in direct conversation with the user. Thanks to Chatbot technology we even get hints to emphasize.

Mondly AR currently offers access to seven languages: American English, British English, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and German. With the next update planned for August 2018, however, the app is to be expanded to a full 30 languages.

Mondly AR: Compatible Smartphones and Prices

You can download the AR app for free from the Google Play store, the introductory lessons are also free. If you want to learn correctly, 9.99 euros per month (or 47.99 euros per year) are due. Mondly AR works with the following smartphones: Samsung Galaxy S7, S8, S9, Note 8; Google Pixel 1, 2; LG V30, V30+ Android, ASUS Zenfone AR and OnePlus 5.
