The so-called “Andromeda” project, which designs a phone in Microsoft’s Surface series, has been in the news since last year, but the information that was emerging was rather scarce until now. A filtered email along with new APIs found in the latest pre-release of Windows 10 gives us new clues about this device being developed by Redmond’s giant.
The Surface phone would have a foldable design
The Surface phone with code name Andromeda is not just going to be a conventional “phone”. It will be a “pocket device” following in the footsteps of Microsoft’s successful Surface line of flexibly hinged notebooks.
Based on the patented files that were known and the filtered email from Microsoft, a Twitter user has posted some detailed renders of what this folding Surface phone might look like.

In the latest news, Panos Panay – head of Surface – posted a photo on Twitter of him and a cartoon of him – a gift from LG. Apparently, the two images are linked to a two-piece hinged photo frame, which resembles the Surface phone in tablet mode when fully extended. This could be an indication that LG will produce the screens, or we’re just looking for a clue that isn’t there, but it gets a lot of attention.
A new Microsoft phone has been rumoured for about a year now and it is certain that Microsoft will seek to create a phone that will attract attention through its innovation and not just improve the specifications of existing phones, as it did with its Lumia series in the past. It is still too early to talk about dates, but it is said that we could see it by the end of this year. We’ll keep our hopes up.
