Micron announces the 5300 and 7300 SSDs with 96 3D TLC NAND layers in numerous formats and capacities

Micron has introduced new Enterprise SSDs with PCIe and NVMe in parallel to the 5300 series with SATA connection. The Micron 7300 series also uses the latest generation of 3D NAND with a 96-layer architecture. These drives promise up to 3,000 MB/s over PCIe 3.0 x4.

Micron 7300: NVMe for the Masses

There is not much high performance, but it offers significantly higher performance than SATA SSDs. Micron speaks of “NVMe for the masses” and prices that should be close to SATA models.

The model selection is diverse, with two sub-series, three different form factors and sometimes large performance differences. The 7300 Pro with a guaranteed durability of 1 DWPD (Drive Write Per Day) is available as a 2.5-inch version with a U.2 connection in capacities of 960 GB at 7.68 TB and transfer speeds of 2,400 to 3,000 MB/s reading and 700 to 1,800 MB/s writing. M.2 variants of the 7300 Pro are also planned, offering 480GB to 3.84TB, 1,300 to 3,000MB/s read and 400 to 1,000MB/s write. A 110 mm long M.2 module is used for 3.84 TB and 1.92 TB, while the smaller versions have a length of 80 mm.

The 7300 Max has more reserve memory for a longer life of 3 DPWD, but less reserve memory. The U.2 version offers 800GB to 6.4TB with similar sequential transfer rates, but with random write performance of 4K, superior to the 7300 Pro. The two M.2 models of the 7300-Max series offer 400 GB or 800 GB on an 80 mm longboard.

As with all PCIe 3.0 x4 models, a dual-port (2×2) connection is also supported. The average latency time for random data access is read by Micron as 90 µs and written 25 µs. In addition, 256-bit AES encryption and power failure protection are used to announce data in the cache (in flight).

Micron does not make any public statements about the prices of the 7300 SSDs.
