MediaTek today announced its latest 5G chipset, the Dimensity 800U. Like all Dimensity chipsets from the company, it supports 5G connectivity, but the chipset also offers some additional benefits.
MediaTek releases Dimensity 800U mid-range 5G chipset
These include support for 5G + 5G Dual-SIM Dual Standby (DSDS) and Dual Voice New Radio (VoNR). It also supports 5G two-carrier aggregation (2CC 5G-CA), which should speed things up.
Dr. Yenchi Lee, vice president of MediaTek’s Wireless Communications business unit, said, “MediaTek is committed to improving the user experience with our leading semiconductor technology, whether consumers are streaming, playing or taking pictures. “MediaTek’s Dimensity 800U brings the most advanced next-generation technology to the Dimensity SoC family, bringing MediaTek’s advanced 5G, imaging and multimedia technologies to powerful 5G smartphones that deliver an incredible 5G experience”.
As for the rest of the chipset, it supports features like 120Hz FHD + displays for a smoother experience in everything that you do. The display can now support the HDR10+ standard and MediaTek says it will look even better with the MiraVision PQ engine. In the camera department, devices with the Dimensity 800U can be equipped with up to a 64 MP sensor in a quad lens configuration.
The Octa-core chipset has a clock speed of 2.4 GHz in the larger cores and is expected to be 11% faster than the Dimensity 700 series with 28% GPU. MediaTek has not revealed when the new chipset will be available, but it will probably be released in devices later this year.
In addition to the Dimensity 720, some of the key features that make the Dimensity 800U stand out are the support of 120Hz HDR 10+ displays and MiraVision enhanced HDR 10 playback. It is also compatible with LPDDR4X RAM and UFS 2.2 memory. The chip supports a single 64 MP camera module and up to four rearview camera sensors. OEMs can also use MediaTek’s APU to provide camera features such as AI-enhanced scattering mode. Finally, the Dimensity 800U is also equipped with MediaTek’s UltraSave technology, which adjusts power consumption according to the load type.
MediaTek’s Dimensity series chips have not yet been released outside China. If the recent smartphone adoptions are absolutely necessary, the Dimensity 800U could make its debut alongside Redmi / Realme smartphones in the coming weeks.
