MariaDB moves to the Cloud: portrayed by SkySQL

MariaDB Corporation announced the launch of the MariaDB SkySQL database, available as a cloud service – database-as-a-service (DBaaS). The new service is based on the MariaDB platform optimized for cloud systems.

MariaDB SkySQL can be used for transactions or for collecting and storing analytical data.

The company calls its solution a “new generation service”: it does not have the drawbacks of first-generation cloud databases, such as limited configurability, which made it unsuitable for mission-critical tasks.

The MariaDB Platform X4 engine supports “intelligent transactions” and can store data in both row and column formats, eliminating the need to create separate databases for transactions and analysis. Cloud databases can use either block storage (Amazon EBS, Azure Managed Disks or Google Persistent Disks) or object storage such as Amazon S3, Azure Blob Storage or Google Cloud Storage. MariaDB SkySQL supports both modes, even simultaneously.

The company also offers SkyDBA cloud management service for those tasks that cannot be automated. Currently, SkySQL is available on the Google Cloud platform, with prices starting at $0.45 per hour. Details are available on the developer’s website.
