Logitech G502 Hero comes with the 16K Sensor at IFA 2018

Logitech’s G502 HERO 16K mouse is still in the news as the first update to a Proteus Spectrum version that replaces the Proteus Core. But the switch to the V3 with a sensor change is imminent, as the Swiss manufacturer has decided to integrate its latest sensor Hero 16K.

The G502 is hard to replace. Logitech is not wrong about it and does not offer a real replacement and prefers to publish different models without overly competitive with its bestseller. However, this does not prevent them from updating their mouse with new technologies, as their competitor Razer already does with its flagship models. Now is the time to welcome the new G502 Hero.

Hero, named after its sensor “High-Efficiency Rated Optical” in its latest version “16K” referring to its maximum sensitivity of 16,000 dpi has just been introduced with the Logitech G Pro mouse. A high-power sensor that was initially integrated into the manufacturer’s wireless gaming mice but has now integrated into its wired mouse despite the remarkable performance of the Pixart PMW3366 optical sensor that had previously equipped the G502. The Hero 16K can operate at speeds of 10.16 m/s (7.6 m/s on the G502 Proteus Spectrum) without acceleration, smoothing or filtering and processes 40 g acceleration without flashing. It’s hard to tell a real difference in practice, especially since the energy saving argument doesn’t work like a wired mouse, but there had to be a reason to put an older G502 back on the market.

An unchanged button: What about vibration problems?

Apart from this sensor change and the integration of Omron’s more robust main keys (50 million guaranteed activations, compared to 20 million before), nothing new, unfortunately not even at button level.

We will also see that the manufacturer’s last gaming mice have returned to the classic wheels. The interesting part is the designable wheel, but this technology remains noticeable in office automation and offers more versatility to the mice that integrate it. Let’s hope that the possible G503 that Logitech might one day bring out of its labs is still equipped with such a wheel, but revised and corrected to gain reliability.
The weight of the years

Until then, let us not deny our joy at seeing such a good mouse brought back to the taste of the day. The G502 in its Hero version has no reason not to seduce further when it is released in October, except perhaps by its selling price of € 89.99, a little high compared to the prices of web merchants for the G502 Proteus Spectrum, fell below the bar of € 70 and sometimes on sale at around € 50.

We can also start throwing him a slightly higher mass compared to the last mice for players who are getting lighter and lighter. With 121 g without cable and the ability to add up to 5 small weights of 3.6 g each, the G502 Hero remains heavy enough for a 2018 mouse, especially compared to the G900 or G Pro, which are limited to 107 g or 80 g despite the integration of a battery.
