The new figures revealed by Cupertino’s company show an increase of 11 percentage points since last January 18th, when iOS 11 was installed in 65% of the devices, and 24 percentage points since November 6th, when iOS 11 had a 52% presence in iPhone and iPad devices.

As we can see from the chart above, 19% of devices continue to use iOS 10, while only 5% continue to run iOS 9 or earlier. These latter figures are probably due to the fact that many of these devices, being older, can no longer be upgraded to the latest version of iOS.

Although iOS 11 adoption rates have been steadily increasing, the rate of updates has been markedly slower than iOS 10. In fact, MacRumors points out that in February 2017 iOS 10 had already been installed in almost 80 percent of the devices.

The reason for this is twofold. On the one hand, iOS 11 has had numerous bugs, such as problems with HomeKit and Spectre and Meltdown vulnerabilities. On the other hand, the controversy about the lower performance of older devices would have had a greater impact, which undoubtedly slowed down many users from upgrading their devices.

In this regard, the 11 percent increase in the iOS 11 adoption rate experienced from January to April could be attributed to the launch of iOS 11.2 in December and iOS 11.3 in March, both major updates that introduced key new features such as Apple Pay Cash and a faster 7.5W wireless charge for Apple’s newest devices (iOS 11.2), while iOS 11.3 includes a new tool that allows us to know the “health status” of the battery and ARKit 1.5, among other new features.
