Intel’s next-generation LGA 1851 socket exposed for Meteor Lake and Arrow Lake

We know that the Intel Core ‘Meteor Lake’ and ‘Arrow Lake’ processor series are going to use a new socket. In previous reports, it was said that this new socket would be the LGA-2551, but a new leak is naming a different socket.

Contrary to the above information, LGA-2551 would not be the socket used by both Core processor series. The Benchlife site is claiming that the socket is going to be LGA-1851.

The socket LGA-2551 could be a variant for other undisclosed series, and not necessarily misinformation.

The LGA-1851 socket measures 45 × 37.5 mm, the same size as the current LGA 1700/1800 socket of the Alder and Raptor Lake series. This could mean that Intel intends to maintain compatibility with current coolers, similar to AMD with the future AM5 and AM4 sockets.

What the slides are revealing is that the height of the IHS (integrated heat sink) would be changing from 6.73-7.4mm to 6.83-7.49mm. The increase in IHS height may have to do with the change in the internal design of Intel’s processors, which would use tile technology, making the chips somewhat taller.

The new slide also shows the proposed design for the desktop package, which lacks the I/O die that was present on the notebook variant.

The graphics also show something curious, ARL (Arrow Lake) before MTL-S (Meteor Lake-S), which could mean that both products are going to launch simultaneously or that Arrow Lake would come out before Meteor Lake. However, it could also be nothing and the order of release would have nothing to do with this slide. Whatever the answer is, it looks like the two architectures are going to be very close together.

At the moment, we know that Meteor Lake is going to launch in 2023, while Arrow Lake is going to launch in 2024.
