Pentium Gold G5620 recently began to appear in retail stores, with an availability date for March, owing to the unique feature of achieving a clock frequency of 4 GHz for the first time in this series of low-profile processors.

Intel Pentium Gold G5620 Specifications

In the coming months Intel will update its CPU portfolio, as shown by the entries in the database published by momomo_us on Twitter. However, instead of really new models, the manufacturer is focusing on product maintenance and launches known chips with slightly higher clock speeds, the so-called speed humps.

The Pentium Gold G5620 retains its dual-core and four-wire configuration, support for DDR4-2400MHz memory and a 65W TDP. The increased core clock frequency ought to be more than appreciated by computers that want to maintain battery life and low power consumption, but need more power for certain PC tasks.

This seems to be a reaction to AMD’s Athlon 200GE, which costs around 55 euros. With the Pentium Gold G5620 Intel wants to maintain its dominance in the low-end market and offers higher clock rates than the competition, however it is unknown exactly when the processor comes on the market, where the price will be. Currently, this processor is listed at Futureport and ISO-Datentechnik without a pre-sale price.

The Pentium Gold G5620 is the first officially affordable Pentium with 4 GHz. Of course, this is no longer based on the Netburst architecture, but is a dual core with hyperthreading. Intel could not deliver a Prescott (2M) at 4 GHz in 2005: The Pentium 4 HT 672 with 3.8 GHz was the highest clock model, while the Pentium 4 EE with 3.46 GHz – a Gallatin – is still the fastest Pentium 4. Besides the Pentium Gold G5620, a Pentium G5420 is planned, among them the Celeron G4950 with 3.30 GHz and the Celeron G4930 with 3.20 GHz – both with double core without hyperthreading.

With the Pentium Gold G5620, Intel must offer more performance than the AMD Athlon 200GE and a better price than the Ryzen 3 2200G (95 Euro), which puts the Intel Pentium Gold in a difficult position, especially as compatibility with AVX is lacking and the 3.7 GHz Pentium Gold G5400 costs about 77 Euro, so this new Pentium is expected to be in the 85 Euro range. Intel’s Pentium Gold G5620 will have integrated UHD 630 graphics and a 3 MB L3 cache.
