IBM has published its roadmap for quantum computing, which includes plans to radically improve the performance of quantum processors by 41 times up to 2023.
IBM plans to introduce 1121-qubit quantum processors by 2023
The computing giant currently has more than two dozen quantum computers in its cloud that are available for public experiments. These systems are based on IBM’s 5-qubit quantum-canary processors and 27-qubit quantum-falcon processors.
In addition, IBM has a 65 Qbit Quantum Hummingbird processor, which is available to members of the IBM Q-Network.
In the long term, IBM plans to increase the performance of quantum computers by a thousand times and to double the performance of its quantum processors next year with the 127-qubit Quantum Eagle processor.
The Eagle processor has made numerous advances to surpass the 100-qubit mark. The chip uses silicon through (TSV) paths and multi-level wiring to effectively vent a high density of classical control signals while protecting the qubits in a separate layer to maintain high consistency times.
The principles developed for the Falcon and Eagle processors will enable IBM to build a 433-qubit quantum spread system by 2022. The following year, IBM plans to launch its 1,121-qubit Quantum Condor processor.
IBM says that the development required for the Condor processor will have solved some of the most demanding challenges in scaling a quantum computer and will open the door to large systems with millions of qubits.
To make such systems possible, IBM also built a 10-foot high and 6-foot wide “super refrigerator” dilution cooler, codenamed Goldeneye. These coolers will be used to house the million-qubit quantum machines IBM is planning to build. The company believes that such quantum supercomputers will be created in the next decade.
