How is Hiroshima VR experience created?

On August 6, 1945, time stopped in the city of Hiroshima, Japan. The United States drops a nuclear bomb and massacres about 140,000 people. It had not only changed the course of the Second World War, but also the world. Since that day, people have been forced to live their daily lives knowing that a nuclear weapon can put an end to it at any time. Peace is hanging by a thread.

To commemorate this tragic event and in the hope of preventing its repetition, a team of Japanese students has just developed an experiment of virtual reality to repeat the bombing of Hiroshima. The user has the opportunity to observe a reconstruction of the city before, during and after the bombing of the Motoyasu River.

Hiroshima: a VR reconstruction for HTC Vive

This experience for HTC Vive is the result of two years of work by students from Fukuyama Technical High School, about 100 kilometers from Hiroshima. To recreate the city as realistically as in 1945, the students used old photographs and archive images.

The student Yuhi Nakagawa admits that he was horrified when he realized that many of them just disappeared. According to him, this reflects the destructive power of a nuclear bomb.

It is not the first time that World War II has inspired virtual reality applications. A reconstruction of the Nagasaki bombing for children has already appeared, and virtual reality also makes it possible to visit Anne Franck’s house.
