Google will use artificial intelligence to keep data centers cool

Artificial intelligence is increasingly delegated, and now it’s up to Google to prove it: The company uses an artificial intelligence system to cool its data center.

This is IA’s DeepMind system that directly controls cooling in data centers where services such as Google Search, Gmail, and YouTube are running.

The aim is to save energy, as small adjustments can lead to considerable time and cost savings. Every five minutes, Deepmind takes a snapshot of the data center’s cooling system of thousands of sensors and trains a neural network to predict how different decisions will affect future power consumption.

The artificial intelligence system identifies settings that could reduce power consumption, which is then sent to the data center, controlled and implemented by the local controller. This automation of the system allowed Google to implement more granular actions and make fewer errors at the same time.

Of course, the possible actions calculated by Deepmind are compared with an internal list of security restrictions, so that “the robot concerned” does not take on the task of removing the entire data center due to a “wrong decision”.

With this system, Google discovered that automatic learning systems could achieve a 40 percent reduction in energy consumption for cooling, a truly amazing percentage. Google said that in the long run there is potential for the application of the technology in other industrial environments.
