An excellent update comes to the Google Translator, which will significantly improve the quality of offline translations.
As announced by the Google team, the new version will also exploit the potential of NMT (neural machine translation) for offline mode. That is, we can count on the potential of artificial intelligence when using the Translator app from our mobile devices, even when we do not have an internet connection.
This new dynamic ensures that we will always have accurate translations, without having to rely on mobile data, for example, if we are travelling.
Google Translator already uses artificial intelligence in offline translations
In the image, they compare the efficiency of the translations using PBMT (Phrase-Based Machine Translation) which is what was used until now for offline mode, with the NMT that will be implemented now, and the one that is used online.
The advantages are obvious, while the former identifies and translates independent sentences, rather than taking the whole sentence into account, the latter analyses the context to provide an accurate and relevant translation.
This update will be implemented in 59 languages in the coming days. To know if we have this update available just pay attention to one detail: a message on the app’s main page will alert us to update the offline packages we have downloaded, to have the improvements we mentioned.
