GlobalFoundries announces the important improvements of its process to 7 nm FinFET

GlobalFoundries is one of the most critical foundries in the world of semiconductors, so it does not stop investing in new manufacturing processes. The company has detailed all the improvements that its advanced node will offer at 7 nm LP.

GlobalFoundries announces the important improvements of its process to 7 nm FinFET

The new 7 nm LP process of GlobalFoundries will be used by AMD processors Ryzen third generation. that will not reach the market until next year if there are no delays for half a year. This new process will offer a performance 40% higher than its current node at 14 nm. And at the same time, energy consumption will be reduced by 60 %. They are very ambitious figures. So it will be necessary to see if they are fulfilled or part of the improvement remains on the way.

This new node at 7 nm LP will allow reducing the size of the chips to a great extent. That is up to 2.7 times smaller. So, that will allow architects to integrate many more transistors in the same space. With this perhaps it is possible that the third-generation Ryzen include six cores in each CCX complex. That would give twelve coons in a single chip.

GlobalFoundries recently said that this new manufacturing process would allow reaching frequencies up to 5 GHz. Also, that would be one of the most important reasons for such improvement in the performance offered by the new processors. Of course, AMD will not be the only company to use this new manufacturing process. And it is expected a large number of processors comes up with this technology.
