Despite the dispute between “PUBG” and “Fortnite”, the director of PUBG Corp. denied any hostility to Epic Games.
In May 2018, PUBG Corp. sued Epic Games for alleged plagiarism of Fortnite from PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. In June of the same year, however, the Asian company decided to withdraw its charges. While most think that the studios have a somewhat complicated relationship, the actual situation is quite different. Both parties were able to settle all their differences and are now treated with respect.
Brian Corrigan, director of PUBG Corp, told the PCGamesN portal that there is no grudge with the people at Epic Games, even the two companies already have a close relationship: “People have the idea that there is some hostility or something with Epic, but they are one of our best partners, we talk to them all the time.
The reality is that the two games were inspired in some way by their rival. Epic Games saw that the battle Royale could be a success and integrated it into Fortnite in 2017, while PUBG replicated the battle pass in 2018. As the great speakers of the genre today, many other proposals have not hesitated to copy several elements without hesitation, but the litigation arose only between the giants.
The director of the PUBG Corp. assures that the identity of the PUBG is unique
Corrigan himself accepts that video games can learn from each other, but that doesn’t mean that battle royale is the same, because each has its own market and its own business model. “We have a more intense competition game. I think the way the seasons will work for us will be different in the future,” the executive added.
He also made it clear that his studio is not a “photocopier” and that PUBG’s identity is unrepeatable: “If there are pieces that work for us, that’s fine, because we should learn from the best teachers in many different games, but our formula is unique. Another important point is that Tencent, the Chinese entertainment giant, has investments in both PUBG Corp. and Epic Games, which would also have put an end to the litigation.
