In April 2016, Facebook announced the establishment of research laboratories under the code name as Building8. Which is planned to DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) in a similar manner to develop more advance hardware.

Motivated Team

The Building 8lab has a leader Regina Dugan, who is former DARPA executive. Before taking over Building 8 leadership, Dugan works for advance technologies and products (ATAP) Google division. Now, the lab may be ready to launch hardware products from the “All-Star Team of Science and Technology”, including products that enhance realism, unmanned aerial vehicles and even nervous systems science.

At present, Building8 lab has a total of four projects, involving the camera, enhance the reality, flight equipment and brain scanning technology. There are reports that the technical leader of each project is the team’s “small CEO”. They have 2 years to prove the concept of feasibility. Although Facebook has not released any related products, but in this year’s developer conference FB8, Building 8 “new toys” may become the focus in the world of technology.

Building 8 Mind Reading Project

After the establishment of Building 8, Facebook has adventures into the field of hardware development, despite its lack of relevant experience. Now, Facebook is facing the Google and Apple and other technology giants of the incentive competition. Which are the new departments and even take the Google ATAP and X laboratory similar structure. The team’s research focus is the same as of Google.

So the new version of Facebook, which can read the user’s mind. Building 8’s team includes a neuro scientist at Johns Hopkins University, who is involved in the development of mind-controlled prostheses. The scientist now leads Building 8’s brain scanning technology project.

Introducing virtual reality to Facebook and enhancing reality is the most demanded desire of Zuckerberg. Building8’s another project involves the camera and enhance the virtual reality technology.

The third project also relates to medical applications, from Stanford University’s interventional cardiologist. Primarily developing early medical equipment. These academic collaborations are also an important part of Facebook’s long-term plan.

Building 8 is also developing consumer version of UAVs with the help of robots and computer vision expert Frank De Laerte. De Laerte was the chief scientist of Skydio, an unmanned aerial vehicle startup, and Stephen McClure, the former head of the company, also joined Building8.
