Apple has long been looking to reduce its dependence on other companies, so it develops many of the components for its iPhones itself. This is something the firm wants to do with its 5G modem as well, which has been in development for some time. While it’s going to take several years to be ready.
Apple will use its own 5G modem in iPhones in several years
Several experts say we’re going to have to wait several years until Cupertino makes use of its own 5G modem in its devices.
In-house 5G modem
Apple’s idea was to avoid having to use Qualcomm’s 5G modem in its iPhones for too many years, something that would allow them to cut costs and also reduce dependence on other companies. That’s why Cupertino has been working for some time on this component, which will give its phones the desired 5G connectivity. Apple has been using Qualcomm’s modem for a few years now while developing its own.
The company had hoped that next year’s generation, the iPhone 15, would already make use of this 5G modem. Unfortunately, development is going slower than desired. It doesn’t look like it will be next year when it will be used, but some say it will have to wait until at least 2025. A three-year wait, at least, to be able to use its own 5G modem.
This means that Apple is going to continue to make use of Qualcomm’s 5G modem until at least 2025. That is if the development of its own modem is finally completed and gives the company’s desired performance, something that remains to be seen. So Apple will have to rely on Qualcomm for a few more years, and they will continue to use that modem in at least three generations of phones.
