Apple is known for introducing the newest manufacturing process and helping the industry to avoid small mistakes by introducing a new manufacturing process earlier than others. Apple was once again TSMC’s first and largest customer at 7nm and will continue to be so with the arrival of 5nm by the end of 2020.
Apple will launch the first 5nm processor smartphones by the end of 2020
According to a report published by Fudzilla, the smartphones with 5 nm chips are expected by the end of 2020 and not even Apple can make it in 2019, because it’s too early to expect in the upcoming year. It seems that the industry will introduce with two generations of 7nm before we go down to 5nm, which will not make it easier to improve performance from generation to generation. This is the time when companies are innovating with intelligent architecture and intelligent methods to save energy and further optimize the performance and area of the matrix.
Apple and Huawei will take lead to introduce 5nm technology
Once again, Apple could be the first in September 2020 to unveil the new processing power at 5nm. Huawei is also expected to catch up very soon, but the Qualcomm is expected to announce the 5nm chip by late 2020 and deliver early 2021. ARM has already unveiled its Hercules client CPU processor, which can be manufactured in 7 and 5 nm and is planned for 2020. So, all these indications gives an idea of what Huawei, Qualcomm and MediaTek will have in the same period. Apple is using the ARM architecture but there are significant improvements to the kernel.
Still, 7nm potential needs to be explored
Before switching to the 5nm, the 7nm still has a lot to offer and we will see many great products, especially in the mobile market. Reducing transistors occupying area and letting billions of them work synchronously is a very difficult task. For this reason, such reports and investigations should always be conducted with a grain of salt, as this is the current plan and depends on TSMC and it’s Risk Production Plan 2019.
