Mark Gurman reports that Apple had considered not enabling wired charging on iPhone X and only allowing the smartphone to charge via AirPower. As we know, this did not happen and Airpower still does not exist.
During the development of iPhone X, Apple considered completely removing the wired charging system. This was not possible at that time because wireless charging was still slower than conventional methods. In addition, a wireless charger would have significantly increased the price of the smartphone. Bloomberg reports that this also meant removing the Lightning socket. Apple designers hoped that most ports and buttons would bless the timing to make the device look clearer. A few years ago, it was reported that Apple’s design director Jony Ive’s ultimate goal is that the iPhone resembles a “single pane of glass,” while Apple has repeatedly expressed its ambitions to “create a wireless future.
With products and technologies ranging from AirPods and AirPower to the W1 and W2 wireless chips, Apple is already well on its way into this wireless future. Apple also made the controversial decision a few years ago to remove the headphone jack from the Phone 7.
