AMD will rename FreeSync 2, Now called FreeSync 2 HDR

AMD is preparing some changes to its current FreeSync 2 technology, which will be renamed to better represent this technology.

AMD will rename FreeSync 2, Now called FreeSync 2 HDR, AMD will rename FreeSync 2, Now called FreeSync 2 HDR,
FreeSync 2 HDR will now require DisplayHDR 600

The people at PC Perspective conducted an interesting interview with AMD, during which a representative of the company spoke about the impending changes in the AMD FreeSync program. Essentially, the company found that there is some confusion among consumers as to exactly what features FreeSync 2 offers compared to the first generation. That’s why they’re renaming it FreeSync 2 HDR, which conveys the focus on the new feature set: LFC (Low Framerate Compensation) and the FreeSync 2 HDR fast channel for improved tone mapping.

AMD also clarified what specifications are required for a monitor to receive FreeSync 2 HDR certification: support for at least HDR600, 99% coverage of BT.709 and 90% of the DCI P3 color spectrum. A minimum response time was also mentioned, although the exact value of this number is unknown. An interesting point that can be deduced from the change from AMD is that this is more than cosmetic: The first AMD FreeSync 2 certification program required screens to have at least HDR400.

AMD wants to control standards more tightly with “FreeSync 2 HDR”, showing that HDR400 is not the real HDR they want, so manufacturers will have to improve this section if they want to get the precious new AMD certification on the next screens we will see this year and next.
