AMD Sharkstooth (ZEN 2 Threadripper 3000) appears in Geekbench 4

Today a new and mysterious entry has been published in the tests of the Geekbench program. Under the name AMD “Sharkstooth” it is possible that this is a prototype of the next generation of threadripper processors.

This new AMD processor contains 32 physical cores and 64 threads with a base frequency of 3.60 GHz. Its identifier describes it as “AuthenticAMD Family 23 Model 49 Stepping 0” and it is obvious that no second-generation threadripper responds to these features. For the same reason, rumors of a prototype of the new Zen 2 architecture threadripper are very tangible.

These new threadrippers are rumored to arrive in October to compete against Intel’s Cascade Lake X processors.

In single-core performance, it has a score of 5,677 points, while in multi-core performance the figure reaches 94,772. This moves the Intel Xeon W-3175X, which yields similar returns, but with a lower core counter. Here you can see the results and features:

The relevant point is that the AMD “Sharkstooth” achieves about 18% better performance in this benchmark than the threadripper 2990WX. Such an improvement over the previous generation is not to be despised and more so when you consider that this is not official data.

The end frequencies may increase and the cache configuration may change slightly. On the other hand, note that the motherboard is an exclusive internal model for testing this CPU. It is called “WhiteHavenOC-CP” and has been paired with about 128 GB of memory and a 64-bit Linux operating system.

And if you want to know the results of all subtests, you can see them in the following link to the Geekbench website. There’s a second test where the single-core performance goes up to 5.932 but the multi-core performance goes down to 93.344 and here’s a comparison between the two.

AMD will probably release a new chipset that supports PCIe Gen 4 with improved VRMs and cooling, but without losing backward compatibility with earlier sockets. AMD third-generation threadripper is also expected to be announced in October to compete with Intel’s new processors.
