AMD revises their decision: B450 and X470 owners can use Zen 3 on specific terms

After the huge controversy in the community when AMD announced that future Zen 3-based Ryzen would only be compatible with the 500 series motherboards, the company decided to reverse that decision and grant “beta” support for those processors on motherboards with B450 and X470 chipsets under certain conditions.

Zen 3, AMD revises their decision: B450 and X470 owners can use Zen 3 on specific terms,

These are the points AMD mentions for B450 and X470 users who want to upgrade to Zen 3:

  • We will develop code to support “Zen 3” based processors in selected beta BIOSes for AMD B450 and X470 motherboards and make it available to our partners.
  • These optional BIOS updates disable support for many AMD Ryzen desktop processor models to free up ROM space.
  • These select beta BIOS updates will provide a one-path upgrade path for “Zen3” processors that will arrive later this year. It will not be possible to revert to an older BIOS version.
  • To avoid confusion, we intend to offer BIOS downloads only to verified 400 Series motherboard purchasers who have purchased a new processor with “Zen 3” architecture. This will ensure that users have a bootable processor before the BIOS upgrade to minimize the risk of the user becoming unbootable.
  • Release times and availability of BIOS updates will vary and may not immediately coincide with the availability of the first Zen3-based processors.
  • This will be the last update that AMD can provide for 400 series motherboards to support new processors. A newer motherboard will be required after the release of Post-Zen 3.
  • AMD continues to recommend that buyers choose a 500 Series motherboard to get the best performance and features from the new CPUs.

Basically, AMD says that not all motherboards will support Zen 3, and BIOSes for motherboards that support Zen 3 will not be publicly available (at least on official sites), but will only be provided to users who purchase a processor based on this new architecture. For those models that do not support the processor less BIOS upgrade, users will also need to have an earlier processor to upgrade their BIOS to Zen 3 compatible, as AMD will not provide us with the BIOS until we have the Zen 3 processor, but to upgrade the BIOS we will also need to have another earlier processor, making it impossible to sell the old CPU until we have the new CPU and do the upgrade.

It will be interesting to see how many motherboards receive these BIOSes and in what period of time since the release of Zen3, at least it’s good news for those who are willing to meet all these points mentioned by AMD, even if they are not the optimal ones.
