AMD is about to launch a new gaming graphics card, the Radeon RX 590, which will address the core demand over the Christmas period.
The specifications show that the card operates at a ‘turbo’ clock frequency of 1545 MHz, compared to 1342 MHz for the RX 580. The recorded tests were performed with an i7 7700K, 16 GB DDR4 memory at 3000 MHz and the 18.40 version of the graphics controller.
AMD RX 590 costs $279 and is 12% higher than RX 580
Thanks to Polaris’ sophisticated architecture, which now uses a 12nm manufacturing process, AMD managed to get 12% more power and 15% more clock frequency out of Polaris silicon. The official price would be $279, slightly above the RX 580.
This solution is not really new. It is an evolution of the existing system. The Polaris architecture has been optimized again and benefits from a transition to the 12 nm FinFET. This Radeon RX 590 has a Polaris 30 GPU with similar mechanics as the “Polaris 20” (Radeon RX 580) and “Polaris 10” (Radeon RX 480).
Radeon RX 590, details and prices
The use of a finer engraving gives AMD more flexibility on the frequency side. Expected increases are between 10 and 15% compared to the GPU of the Radeon RX 580.
On the memory side, there is no change with 8 GB GDDR5 operated over a 256-bit bus. Note that some partners probably overclock memory. Here is an overview of the Radeon RX 580:
Radeon RX 580 | Radeon RX 590 | |
GPU | Polaris 20 – 14nm FF | Polaris 30 – 12nm FF |
Stream Processors | 2304 | 2304 |
Basic frequency | 1257 MHz | 1469 MHz |
Boost Frequency | 1340 MHz | 1545 MHz |
Memory frequency | 8 Gbps | 8 Gbps |
Memory | 8 GB GDDR5 | 8 GB GDDR5 |
Suggested price | $ 229 | $ 279 |
According to a review proposed by VideoCardz, AMD has set the base price for its Radeon RX 590 at 279 US dollars, about 50 US dollars more than the price for RX 580 with 8 GB. This positioning should be improved by the inclusion of three bundle games. It is planned to offer “Tom Clancy’s The Division 2”, “Devil May Cry 5” and “Resident Evil 2”. AMD would also work with several partners on Free Sync Screen + Radeon RX bundles.
Radeon RX 590 8 GB, performance
Finally, as far as performance is concerned, the solution is expected to be 12% faster than the current Radeon RX 580.
