The Zen 2 processors from AMD already offer impressive performance, but that doesn’t mean the Ryzen boom is going to have to stop there. AMD plans to be competitive beyond Zen 2, Zen 3 and Zen 4 architectures in the future, so AMD needs to think big and long when developing Zen 5-based processors.
AMD engineers focus on Zen 5
It has already been confirmed that AMD’s Zen-3 kernel, representing the Ryzen 4000 series, has been completed and will arrive next year. AMD is now entering the testing and manufacturing phase for Zen 3, and AMD’s large design teams are preparing for their Zen 4 and Zen 5 architectures: AMD has confirmed that both architectures are “in the design phase,” according to the Horizon Executive Summit in Rome, Italy.
AMD’s Zen design teams work to measure. One team is working on its next-generation CPU architecture, while the other team is working on medium- and long-term architectures. After completing the design of Zen 3, AMD engineers moved to Zen 5, a CPU architecture that will be launched in mid-2012.
AMD explained that they listen to their customers’ opinions and use them to guide the development of future Zen architectures. This will help AMD’s Zen cores better adapt to a wider range of workloads and see where customers see the need for higher CPU performance.
While AMD is working to bring the third generation EPYC and Ryzen processors to market in 2020, the company’s design teams are working on two generations of follow-on products. With this in mind, we can be confident that AMD plans to increase CPU performance in the foreseeable future, which is good news for us consumers.
