AMD’s Navi GPU architecture fuels its graphics cards for today’s games, but the red team could also work on a separate next-generation line for the Radeon Instinct series, focusing on AI and HPC calculations. The HWiNFO tool already has preliminary support for the Arcturus GPU, which will breathe life into this new generation of Radeon Instinct, talked about since last year.
The AMD Arcturus GPU is included in the compatibility list and maybe part of the next generation of the Radeon Instinct ‘MI100’ HPC / AI Accelerator with a version planned for 2020.
AMD Arcturus: Radeon Instinct with lower power consumption
GPU Arcturus first appeared in 2018 on Linux (Phoronix Forums) and was later confirmed by an AMD employee that he would use certain codenames for the chip itself, rather than using surnames that could reveal the product/market name. The Arcturus AMD GPU will be the first to fall on this line, but no further details were mentioned at this time.
HWiNFO has added preliminary support for AMD Arcturus in the latest version v6.13-3945 BETA. In addition, Komachi_Ensaka revealed a number of chips marked under the AMD AI family, and Arcturus seems to be one of them. The AI family also includes other GPUs such as Vega 10, Vega 12 and Vega 20. Judging by the name of the AI, the list might mention the AMD Radeon Instinct-based GPU accelerators, as the three Vega GPUs listed have been included in the Radeon Instinct graphics cards for HPC and Artificial Intelligence. Arcturus is also on the same list, but if we look at how the cards are mentioned in descending order, the ones at the bottom of each family are also the latest additions to each specific orientation.
We’ll see what AMD has in store for us with the new Radeon Instinct series, which is designed to deliver higher performance and lower power consumption for the professional market.
