It’s been almost two years since the last Echo Dot was launched. Since then, Amazon has not renewed the device beyond software updates that have improved the capabilities of its language assistant Alexa.

The design of the speakers could change very soon in order to make the leap into the third generation, which will be available this year. The Numerama and FrAndroid portals have published a series of images that illustrate the final look of the new device, with very significant changes to the current version, such as a slight magnification.

The new Echo Dot would do without the current plastic surrounding its circumference and use a grey fabric cover that hides its side speakers. The latter would be a very important change from the product currently on offer, where the speakers are at the top. The surface will no longer be flat to show rounded surfaces while retaining the four buttons (Volume Up/Down, Activation and Mute) that already exist.

According to the Gallic media, this new generation is internally called “Donut”. Interestingly, the first and second generation were known as “pancakes” or “biscuits”. The device is currently in a test phase with several employees of the company, which are probably the cause of these leaks.

While it is not yet possible to confirm that this will be the final design of the device, the sources that developed the images have a very good history of previous leaks. The third generation of Amazon Echo Dot is expected to be launched in September due to the positive response from Google Home and other companies that already have their own speakers on the market.
