Xiaomi is working on a new smartphone that can change color

After the OPPO Reno6 Pro+ Detective Conan Edition, Xiaomi is now joining the wave of smartphones with electrochromic backs, a technology that allows the device to change color by applying a voltage to the paint.

The information comes from Chinese leaker Digital Chat Station, which claims in a post that Xiaomi is testing a device with a low-power photochromic/electrochromic back. It remains to be seen which of the two technologies the company will opt for.

To show an example of photochromic technology, the Vivo S10 smartphone has a back that changes from orange to blue in sunlight. The color change occurs when ultraviolet rays hit the material.

On the other hand, we have the OPPO Reno6 Pro+ Detective Conan Edition, which has an electrochromic back that changes from silver to red and vice versa. This color change occurs when voltage is passed through the glass and maybe the technology that Xiaomi ends up using.

Unfortunately, there’s no clarity yet on which of the two technologies Xiaomi will ultimately opt for, though there could be more news soon. So stick with HD Technology if you’re interested in which device the company will eventually implement these technologies into.
