SK Hynix wants 128-layer 3D NAND at the the same speed despite COVID-19 damage

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the world economy is in balance. Despite the unprecedented uncertainty, storage manufacturer SK Hynix has decided to maintain the investments previously planned for this year.

The new memory factory will be completed, the third generation 10nm DRAM will be introduced and expanded, and the company will begin production of 128-layer 3D NAND memory in the current quarter.

All of the above plans and other solutions were announced by SK Hynix this morning at the company’s quarterly job reporting conference for the first quarter of the calendar year 2020. Overall, the first three months of the new year have been a good time for the company to get back to work, despite the fact that the consequences of the coronavirus outbreak have already begun to show their full potential.

The company’s sales for the reported quarter were 7.2 trillion won ($5.84 billion), operating profit was 800 billion won ($648.73 million) and net profit was 649 billion won ($526.28 million).

Despite the global SARS CoV 2 coronavirus pandemic, sales, and operating profit increased by 4% and 239%, respectively, in the first quarter of a consecutive quarterly comparison. Demand for DRAM servers and server SSDs played a positive role, boosting memory demand.

The quarantine and self-isolation of citizens around the world required an increase in the capacity to meet the growing demand for remote resources, thus generating demand for storage and retention.
The increased demand for server storage modules outweighed the weak demand for storage for mobile devices.
