AMD FSR is compatible with Xbox One and included in Game Development Kit

It’s been 2 days since the announcement of AMD FSR (FidelityFX Super Resolution), the answer to NVIDIA’s DLSS that will work on AMD Radeon RX 6000, RX 6000M, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series. Today we learn that FSR will be included in the Xbox Game Development Kit and that the Xbox One will be compatible.

With the news that AMD FSR will be part of the Game Development Kit (GDK), which also supports the Xbox One X and One, Microsoft is not letting down users of previous generations. This fulfills what was set weeks ago, the only thing missing is the PlayStation 5.

AMD FSR (FidelityFX Super Resolution) lands on the Xbox

A few months ago we stated that one of the reasons for the delay is that the goal of this technology is multiplatform. The rumors seem to be confirmed and the delay would be more than justified since Xbox and PlayStation 5 will benefit from AMD Fidelity FidelityFX Super Resolution.

This technology is the alternative to NVIDIA DLSS, but with the difference that it works in open source and could also be used by Intel graphics cards. We received word from Jason Ronald, Director of Program Management at Xbox, who tweeted that AMD FSR is now available in the Xbox Game Development Kit.

We’re excited to continue our close partnership with @AMD and see what game developers can achieve with FidelityFX Super Resolution, available for preview today in our GDK for @Windows, @Xbox Series X|S and #XboxOne consoles pic.twitter.com/A446cNRUug

He confirms that this technology will come to Xbox One consoles that don’t have the RDNA 2 GPU architecture. So will AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution be backward compatible? It looks like it will after all.

As we’ve already seen, one of the challenges for AMD is to improve the loss of image quality after applying FSR in-game, especially in Performance or Balanced mode. Still, this is great news for gamers who want to get more FPS without losing much quality.

AMD’s technology is not based on neural network algorithms and is similar to DLSS in terms of rescaling technology. The first question we ask after seeing the news is when will we see Xbox games supporting FidelityFX Super Resolution?

Announced is that the Xbox Game Development Kit will include AMD FSR, so it could be a matter of weeks or months. AMD is banking on the advantage of it being an easy-to-implement technology that ensures a few hours of work is enough, too nice?

The FPS gain has been proven, but so has the poor support in video games and the loss of image quality. So far, FidelityFX Super Resolution seems to be off to a good start, but it still has a long way to go, just like what happened with NVIDIA!
